I’m new to watercolors, suggestions?

Nicholas Q asked:

I am taking a watercolor media class at my college and am quit a talented artist with drawing. I have little to no expirience with water colors and am having trouble with the wetness of the paper. I want my lines to be straight and not flood to the sides of the line I paint. Any suggestions? I know that the colors moving to where the water is is a fundamental feature of watercolors but for a peticular abstract I am doing I want straight lines. Should I paint my shapes with water first on dry paper then paint with the color?

Approximately how much would a small (5×5ish) canvas retail?

Alliy. asked:

I wish to purchase a canvas at a nearby art supply store on which to do a watercolor rendition of some sheet music with a bit of caligraphy. I have a small canvas that would be well suited to this that has a crudely done painting on one side and which I would be willing to scrap, as I am on a tight holiday budget (the painting is for a gift). However, I would like a quote first. How much would such a canvas probably cost, US currency?

Alec asked:

I am going to start drawing real life on a sketchbook. I want to sketch on a sketchbook (obviously) but I don’t know what is the best or what isn’t. I may watercolor paint my sketches later on, so take that into consideration as well.

BOTTOM LINE:
-If there is anyone that can recommend basic necessities for amateur sketching, please help me out. I don’t plan on spending more than about, $50. THANKS EVERYONE! :D This is mostly real faces, people, scenes, etc.

Maybe cartoons

Where online can I get watercolor board?

Silverwing6700 asked:

I used to be able to get watercolor board at my local art supply store but they don’t carry it anymore. It was made by Crescent, I believe. It used to look like a very thick illustration board. I hope someone out there knows where I can find it!

Can watercolor pencils be used like regular color pencils?

Friday, April 17th, 2009
BOOM BOOM BANG asked:

I know that they can be used dry like regular colored pencils. However, is there a slight difference in the result (such as density, waxiness, amount of blending that can be done, etc.)
Oh, one last thing, do watercolor pencils wear faster than regular colored pencils?

Transfering something on tracer paper to watercolor paper?

Sunday, April 5th, 2009
Envy asked:

I need to transfer a drawing on tracer paper to watercolor paper so i can color it. The only way to do this that I can think of is to use carbon paper. I’d like to know if anyone out there has any ideas other than that, and if anyone thinks using carbon paper will work or not.

Thanks!
