mahalo asked: i’m a beginning artist that also experiments in watercolor and plans on using canvas as well.
please recommend density, (pad vs. loose), brands, etc.
also a general price range would be nice….

A heavy watercolour paper would do (Bockingford or Saunders 140lb).
I don’t live in the USA so can’t help on prices and brands available there.
Try asking for advice in a good art store, I’ve heard that Pearl are quite helpful.
See if you can find a website for “acrylic painting techniques”.
Have fun.

Acrylics and watercolor are very different.
For acrylic I would use canvas, for watercolors the best is cold press 300 pounds but is expensive. You could try 140 pounds too.

for acrylics, i generally use canvas-you can get primed and ready flat canvas panels pretty cheaply. they range in size so good to practice techniques with and whatnot. also, local art supply stores might carry canvas pads (bound), i don’t know how much those run or which brand is better than the other.
also, at my local art supply store i can get 2 yrds of primed 54″ wide canvas for $6. although it’s not stretched, it’s a great deal. just tack it on your wall and have fun.
experiment with different surfaces around the house.
remember to have fun whatever you are painting on.
cheers!

I do both acrylics and watercolor (as well as colored pencil).
I do acrylic on canvas, illustration board, mat board, watercolor paper (usually 140 cold press), Yupo (a ‘plastic’ type of paper), and primed wood.
The watercolor paper I like best is 140 lb cold press Winsor & Newton. I can get it online, on sale for about $4 per sheet at times. Most art stores carry Arches (VERY expensive in the store) or Strathmore (not good for watercolor, but OK for acrylic).
I also like Kilimanjaro watercolor paper as well as Jack Richeson watercolor paper.
I just don’t use pads often, the paper is not usually as good.
